YEARS TILL 2030
What is SDG7?
Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) calls for affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. About 789 million people currently live without access to electricity and 2.8 billion people lack clean cooking access.
- Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services
- Increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix
- Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency
Having access to clean and affordable energy is essential to people’s health, development, and the environment. Every UN Sustainable Development Goal — education, health, equality, etc. — depends on people having clean energy access.
If we want to fight climate change as part of the Paris Agreement, we need to make sure that as people get new or expanded energy access, this energy comes from clean sources and technologies.
And having sufficient and reliable energy is key to a COVID-19 recovery. Clean energy powers economic development and critical health services. Vaccines can’t be distributed to everyone unless they are kept cool, and that requires electricity.
